Engine Locked Up...

Driving home from an errand, running 40mph just cruising and everything just shut off. Code P2172 displayed. Car would not restart, would not even turn over. Starter would try but no joy. Flatbedded to dealer.

There was no obvious sounds. Engine seemed to continue rotating after it quit.

Dealer says battery is good. Dealer so far advises they removed all the belts and tried to turn the crankshaft by hand and it will not move. Engine is locked. They now want to pull spark plugs and borescope the cylinders, but no telling how much they will start tearing into the engine.

Car is a 2019, 9 months old with 7K miles, never trapped or launched. Nothing but lots of TLC and the motor is locked. But dealer still does not know why.

Never dreamed this would happen on this car! :mad: So, how does problem rate for issues with a top line, premiere car?

Some will say it's under warranty, but that really isn't the issue, is it. I am so disappointed and wholly disillusioned and I can't even put it into words.

Did they give you something to drive?Anything built by human hands has a failure rate but very rare on the hellcat engines because they are all run in before assembly into the car.Lets us know what they find.

Yeah, nothing will take away my frustration. This failure should not happen on a $70K high-end vehicle. In almost every way, I feel violated!

Very unfortunate! This is the first time I've heard of complete failure on a non modded hellcat engine. Please keep us posted.

First off relax. Getting worked up isn't gonna help.

I'd be real curious what they find is the issue. Without a rod sticking out the block I'd be surprised at something that would prevent the engine from even being spun over. When I blew up my original Hellcat engine it still actually ran and turned over with a broken rod in cyl 7.

It wasn't quite like this, but I do recall one other engine like this where a coolant leak caused fluid to hydro-lock one of the cylinders...

Seems like that might be hard to do in this particular scenario though...

Anybody else recall this from the other board? Seems like it was the Intercoolers leaking or something like that???

The only thing I remember is the supercharger seizing up and the guy thought it was the motor, but if the tech in this case removed all the belts that would eliminate the supercharger as the culprit.

Mechanical things break. As good as modern quality control is, sometimes parts fail. That's why warranties exist.

It's not the end of the world and they will get you fixed back up.

I am sorry to hear about your troubles. I have a new one as well and am terrified I am going to have an issue with it. I decided against modding it ( still on the fence about a CAI ). We are all curious as to the cause and how your specific dealer addresses the issue. Please, keep us up to date. Good luck and Godspeed brother.

In concept, I agree with you, but this is real life. As disappointing as it is, failures do happen. They'll fix it. All will be good.

Unfortunately mechanical items occasionally fail. Getting worked up over it just makes you (and maybe others near you) miserable and it won’t help. All will work out just fine assuming the car has been maintained. We are all interested in what caused the lock up.

#4 intake dropped into the cylinder, embedded into the piston with severe cylinder wall scoring and a cracked valve guide. Service Mgr advises he is requesting/ordering a new complete engine.

Have also started a case with SRT and requested a buy-back.

Just out of curiousity, why worry about a buy back? If they put a whole new motor in it its basically like you got 7k miles for free. I went through the buyback process with my Scat Pack and it is a huge pain in the ass. My advice if you go that route, save yourself the time and hassle and get a lawyer because in the end you will need one. I wasted 6 months trying to do it myself, got a lawyer and had it resolved in 60 days.

Damn. How old is the car? Any miles on it when you got it? Normal maintenance followed? Someone goofed up in Saltillo. Annoying as hell, but in the grand scheme of things you have to be able to put it in perspective.

Yeah, trying to see how far I can get, but may have to get some help as you suggest. Thanks for sharing your experience and tips.

Ordered brand new, 10 mo old, 7600 miles with nothing but TLC and very yes, regular maintenance.
