The weight of the wheel/tire combo is a factor, but what some don’t think about is the location of that weight. Weight closer to the center of rotation takes less energy than weight further from the center. Hoosier tires should weigh less on the perimeter.

True. Lighter rotors make a difference. But lighter tires make a larger difference.

Some good info added here.. too bad it came AFTER I decided to go w the 305 MT's. lol
I can't complain, I've now been 1.40x 60' w the 315/50 and the 305/45 MT. Maybe I need to get the Hoosier and see if they'll get me into the 1.3xx range?
Hmmmm.... might be worth the effort.

Amazon lists the shipping weights fo the following +/-28" tall tires as:

28x10.5x17 Hoosiers at 25lbs

28x11.5-17LT Hoosier QTPs at 23lbs (est)

28x14.5-17LT Hoosier QTPs (the widebody jam) at 25lbs (est)

325/45R17 M&Hs at 34lbs

305/45R17 M/Ts at 31lbs

345/40R17 Toyo TQs at 34lbs

Keeping in mind that each tire is dimensionally and structurally different across a range of factors (including approved wheel width). The application of each tire is across a spectrum too: full drag to street drag radial with actual useable tread depth. This is obviously application specific. The other thing is personal launch technique (learning your car and tire), and suspension adjustments (stock to modified) and how hard it hits (converter vs clutch).

I am putting the 325/45R17 M&Hs on my stick HC this year (because I have them) - but the Hoosiers look tasty (especially for the money), and run the 345/40R17 Toyo TQs on my station wagon which has a best 60' of 1.7 - despite having half the power of a HC.

The weight on the 305/45R17 ET Streets is wrong. The ACTUAL weight is what MT says it is in their web site. I have had them here and weighed them multiple times.

I don't remember Ron if it was you or Tim that told me there's 7 lb per tire between the Hoosier and the 305MT. Is that correct?

Next time find a more constructive way of saying that and providing the correct information; simply saying someone is wrong and not backing it up with information you believe to be more accurate makes you look like a contrarian. I've adjusted my post and they are now showing as 31lbs as per the M/T website.

Looks like it is 6lbs if the numbers I posted are accurate. Hoosier doesn't list weights: https://www.hoosiertire.com/assets/Drag6.pdf

mh - I didn't read it that way at all. I read it that someone who actually knows was kind enough to let you know the info you posted was incorrect and also was willing to point you to a correct source for the weight.
Thanks for taking the time to post the info you did though.

Thank you Ron for adding your 1st hand info to my original question.

Bo

I did not say YOU were wrong. I also was pointing out as I said before about Jegs and Summit having wrong info. Not the best idea to go by the sellers info as it is many times wrong. Possibly to create sales. In this case I prefer you use MT's figure. But if anyone is asking I have 30.6 on my scale.

But, you quoted me and I had the incorrect information - so you can see how we got here. Water under the bridge.

To your point: That's why I am more inclined to believe a company that I'd heavy into shipping logistics - they use their figures to make weight, and going over is a huge no-no.

It probably doesn't have all the DOT structure of a regular radial.

I've looked over a similar Hoosier(15" version that my local Hoosier dealer happened to have in stock). You are correct. Their structure is much more that of a typical drag slick than that of a DOT radial. The tread area is quite stiff but the sidewalls are not much stiffer than a slick.

I've read the info about that car. It's posted either here or on the other site, don't remember which one I saw it on. It's performance had a lot to do w me deciding that any of our RE's can go low 10's w nearly nothing done if they're put in the right circumstance of track quality an low DA.

Somethings to consider:

Don't just assume that because Johnny is running tire X and doing 1.X 60's that slapping them on your car will yield the same results.

These guys are talking about tires on 15" rims. Not 17, and 18s

Means the video has no relevance for correct rim widths to the 17" sizes listed above. Nobody runs 13 and 14" widths with those tires.
