Hey everyone, we all know every rear gets noisy. All of them. Is this caused by the ring gear and pinion, or by the LSD? Has anyone destroyed/worn the ring gear/pinion, or is it typically just the lsd portion that goes?

Does it have the friction modifier added to the gear lube ? My '16 started making noise, had it drained & refilled + the FM, pretty quiet since then except for (what I assume to be) some prop shaft whine.

Not all of the Dodges rear ends are whinny, but those that are is due to poor ring gear & pinion setup or the teeth are inconsistently ground and won't mate up properly. Friction modifier will cure some of the growling issues. If you want to get rid of it, find a competent rear end tech that will take the time to set the pinion and ring gear teeth mating surfaces correctly.

The lsd will not make noise going straight.
The ring and pinon. Is what’s making noise and unless you have a brand new one from the starts and shims and crush sleeve and new pinon but you will never get it quite. I was an able to get parts for a couple units. But not something you can just go buy witch is what sucks.

Limited slip or Lysergic Diethlamide Acid will let you hear the whine.
on a serious note My 3.09 from the get go had a bit of noise from day 1. Got slightly louder over time. Now @ 16K miles stayed about same. I have been in a few rides that were louder. Ironically the 17 M6 Challenger cat I had was about the same with 3.70 rears

Did a fluid change on mine and it too went away.

The Super Stock started whining after the first hit with drag radials installed. LOL.
Maybe I'll drain and refill with the Amsoil and friction modifier.

Yeah, they all do it. Literally. Was just curious what is causing the noise the ring/pinion or the limited slip

Its the ring and pinion how they are meshing together. When setting them up if you were to install a new set where the teeth are grabbing from one side to the other can tell you if the whine is more with load or less load. Not sure why the 3.09s seem to be more likely to whine then not. My 17 daytona was quiet though

I think it was to do with the spread of the “teeth” on the pinion and ring gear being (tighter or looser?) on the 3.09

That tightness or looseness is supposed to be set at installation, together with a proper contact pattern.

If the gear ratio had something to do with it, 4.10s would be quite loud, and 5.38s unbearable. My guess is that many with 3.09s didn't bother with gear break-in - more so than with the standard ratio.

Also, far from every gear set "gets noisy", so you can't say that they all do.
