I put my side mirrors down to watch!
When I see smoke rising even with the top of the tires and then I roll out.

Linda :)

Two count in my head and let go of line lock, small smoke with a radial just to get them sticky. With pure slicks three count as they have to get warmed up quite well.

I go by feel .
I get the tires spinning . Paddle shift my way up to third and hold the rpms at about 4000 rpms . When I feel the engine starting to drag down then I let off the brakes and roll out of the burn out .
Different ambient and track temps require a different burn out . In the hot summer I may never see tire smoke in my side mirrors and in the cool fall I will see smoke .

It is going to vary by track and tire… and if you’re hot lapping or if the tires are cooling between passes. If the prep is improving or degrading.
Generally speaking, ^^hpindy nailed it.
How much instruction are you looking for or how much of the process did you want to get into?
Some people start the burnout in the water box and roll it out way past the beams. Whether your stationary or rolling out is also going to be a different experience and outcome.

I’d shake the tires in the water (17” MTs at 17psi) and roll up a foot or so out of the water.
1st, 2nd, 3rd and start rolling forward at about 4K.
Once the motor bogged on the rollout I’d let off the gas and then stop short of the staging lights. Get into my launch settings and roll into the lights ready to rock and roll.
I didn’t use my mirrors to see the smoke, because the smoke didn’t matter as much as the bog on the motor indicating friction between the tire and track.

There is a lot of feel in the burnout process, one that you’ll figure out with time as it works for you.

Depends on tire, track, weather. No substitute for seat time. This may be a personal failing but I tend to err on the side of too little, but that's just personal preference.

Nittos like to be heated so a Big ole Smokey Burnout for them.
Micky's MT ET Rs it only takes seconds for the smoke to rise.

Some people like to put on a show!
Which wastes the life of the DR but they dont usually care.

Linda :)

No choice at a prepped track. If you try to juice your tires during an event they’ll kick you out immediately. Water only at the track.
Goop for the street and the track officials only.
I can only imagine how it would go if you decided to prep it yourself, haha

My burnouts are now pretty short now that I have a linelock - but those P-zero's will put out a lot of smoke in under 20 seconds; 5B101F2E-88FE-4132-B89A-59D21EB1EE2B.jpeg

( filled my 40x 52 shop so much I couldnt see in the door! )

Mine clawed her way out of the garage too.
This was the first time it jumped to the left on me… and as you can see it was getting pretty close to the toolbox and my truck was parked in front of the garage… so I had to thread the needle.

@Hpindy and @Jack_Toepfer nailed it.
I blip the throttle a little in the water, roll out of the water.
I do my burnout in auto and let it shift to 3rd and hold at about 3000 rpm.
When the motor drags down I roll out of the burnout, sometimes a dry hop to check traction.

This isn’t a tutorial as much as it’s a stomp, stay, repeat lesson in burning rubber.
My longest ones were never uploaded, but my buddy wanted to share our adventure with his friends.

This was my first one…
