Had a little hiccup with the daily driver.

In the meantime, I'm in a rental Nissan Versa hatch to fully appreciate my full time vehicle 😦

I switched my setup to flex fuel, 2.56 litens, 105mm HHP TB, and a ported snout from FAS.

During the couple dial in runs on the dyno to make sure the flex tune was doing what it should, power was way down compared to what it should be. After it was started back up it started tapping from the topside. Confidence is that a lifter has failed or is on its way to failing. Tapping sound was there and then went away, which indicates a lifter as well to me vs. a broken rocker, valve spring, etc. which would be a constant new valve train noise once it's broken.

Plan of action was to inspect the lifters and to insure the cam didn't receive any beating from the issue. With the labor cost associated with that, the wheels started turning (came off) in my head. My only thought was what if I put it back together and then it chucks a rod over the summer? I would have to go through this process and potentially wait quite a bit of time due to peak season.

The car has 21,000 miles on it, but has seen well over 200+ WOT hits through the gears + a dozen or so track passes and has been a "900rwhp" setup most of its life on e85. I've been dialed in with oil changes, filter, etc. and the car has been extremely well maintained, but things happen. It is a daily driver for me and sees all seasons in the midwest. This is the first mechanical problem I've had with the vehicle in 3 years.

I decided while everything is out and exposed that I am going to re-enforce the bottom end, add a cam, and put headers on it.

Luckily it's January here in Chicago and not "good" weather. I decided to "tinker" with the car in the off-season, which exposed this problem sooner than later. Shortblock arrives in 2 weeks, and then it will be buttoned back up and finished. I'll provide more details when it is completed. 1623102E-66BA-4C2D-84AC-51F90A9E196E.jpeg 3F12F697-9080-4ABD-AC31-6FE14AB4E044.jpeg

Years ago I had a tapping sound after hitting drag strip in the old car. I pulled the valve cover and rocker on the side the noise was coming from and sprayed Sea Foam in there and let it soak. Of course all my "friends" made fun of me LOL. Put it all back together and drove it to get fuel. The sound was gone and never returned. Crazy LOL. I think there's a video of it on the channel even.

Good luck with the build up!

Yea if there was no power loss associated I would be more suspect of something small like that.

I wouldn't be surprised if the flex-fuel tune was responsible for the loss of power. Did you try the previous tune while you were there to rule it out?
Of course, having a new noise under the hood is almost certainly the culprit, but I would have swapped tunes to be sure that it wasn't just a noise.

Can't wait to see what you do with the new block... I'm betting you'll find your next bottleneck in short order.

It was making too much boost and low power for what is on it. Only 800 wheel at 23psi. They did boost bleed to drop 3psi and it made 750. The setup should not make that much boost.

Did you just make the jump to true flex with all the other changes?

Sucks..but better now than on the road or at the track.

The car was there for the 2.56 Litens, Ported snout, 105tb and the flex fuel. Then this snafu happened.

No, I can only assume it made that boost due to a valve not opening or opening all the way. That combined with the loss in power would tell me there is something "up". I'll provide more info as they tear it down this week.

Oh yea good point 👍 can’t wait to see the culprit, we work on a lot of 5.7s that have rocket arm shaft failures but usually will misfire and sputter and pop under throttle

Yea this was tapping at idle that went away shortly after. Most likely seems to be a lifter going out with all the other "evidence" it experienced.

I decided to build it only because it was going to be out and exposed. Adding a cam and headers while it's apart too.

Car has seen a lot of WOT at this power level. Couldn't get past putting everything back together and the car kicking a rod over the summer.

I was full time since 9,000 miles. This tune will allow me to run one tune for everything, just can't go WOT on the 93 due to the small pulley.

It is similar to curt's flex stuff, but this one picks up the fuel changes quicker. I'll provide feedback on that when I do some testing as well.

Yes. Look forward to running its stock looks. I’m going to guess I see 17-18psi with it. We shall see. Cam and headers will lower boost 2-4lbs I would guess. Ported snout typically adds 1-2psi. I was seeing 18ish with just a 2.5 upper on my older setup with stock snout and Tb.
