I'm 95% sure I'm not doing anything dramatic/crazy, but for fun I was vehicle shopping last night. The dealer offered me $40,000 for my 2016 Challenger Hellcat with 10,000 miles on it. I wasn't comfortable with less than $45,000. Am I wrong, or is the dealer?

40 is lower than I’d take !! Dealerships always play the lowball game on trade it pisses me off to no end as they want top dollar for the cars they are selling . They make huge profits with this gimmick instead lower prices and more volume !!

Too low! They are trying to take advantage of people with Hellcats.

You can get a brand new HC for low 50's. If you can get 45k private, do that. Otherwise, low 40's is all you will get on a trade. Koons offered me 40k on my 11k mile 16 HC. I couldn't swallow it and moved on.

They always offer you a little less than what they think they can get for it should it go to Auction. Usually they will put the car on the lot for $6-7k more than what they bought it from you hoping to make $5K. If you are getting more than that they are making it up on the other end with the new car. If they are offering you 40k, you will see it on the lot for $45-47k the next day. You can make more selling it yourself but it takes time and if you are in a state that exempts you from paying tax on your trade in, you lose that too. Your $40k trade is actually $42,400 in a 6% state tax state. Not saying thats much better but if selling it yourself know that youd need to get at least that to break even with trading it.

I live in Montana and we don't have Sales Tax, so that's not an issue at all.

Dealer just called (shocking) and offered $45,000 on the Hellcat (I let it go to voicemail). Now the real question is do I want to go through with what I'm thinking about (trading my 2012 Power Wagon and my Hellcat in on a new Ford Super Duty Tremor)? I have a hard time thinking about letting the Hellcat go. Ugh!!!

$45k might not be bad. Koons has some new HC's marked down $49.9k. They're left over '19 base models, but they are in the high $40's. You might be in a better part of the Country where this isn't effecting you. I'm right next to Koons territory, so I'd get slammed on trade-in for my Challenger if I went through them right now.
Run your comparison on the Nada Guides site and see what it comes out to.

Your car will retail for 45 give or take a thousand so they are giving you an over allowance to move the truck you are looking at. I'm in the market for a used Hellcat and am seeing prices from 43-48 ish for 15-16 Hellcats with similar mileage to yours and clean Carfax's for what it's worth.

A dealer near me has a daily driver 2016 HC with 44k miles on it and they are asking $39k. Of course I doubt they'll get it, but that's where they are starting their price.I would guess that they gave the person 32-33k for the trade in, maybe even a little less. This car looks to be fairly well loaded with leather seats and some other niceties.

I was offered $1000 trade-in value on my TBSS by the dealer that sold me my HC. I was laughing too hard to be insulted at the time. Truck has been for sale privately for about a year, I am not giving it away because it owes me nothing at this stage. So we wait. It took me 4-5 years to sell my Turbo Buick.

The market isn't what people think it is... well other than designed to separate you from your money.

The Hellcat is something I am not willing to sell or trade in at current used prices (if at all). I will save up if I am determined to get something else. Plan on driving the wheels off of mine.

Wouldn't have the heart to trade your beauty in at $45k. My guess is you will regret it if you are not completely done with the Hellcat. Either way do what is best for you.

I did a similar sort of thing back in 2002 (a 2 for 1 deal) and almost immediately regretted it, missed having a choice. Dumped it within a few years & went back to having 2.

I went from 3 to 2 and hate it so have been looking for another Hellcat. So far haven't found anything great at a good price. I'm pretty surprised dealers think their 15 manual Hellcats with bad supercharger bearings and 9k miles are worth 48k. They aren't moving but the dealers aren't budging much on price either.

I keep trying to sell you mine, but you won't bite on the $98k I'm asking for it.

:)
