After getting "the letter" from FCA in December Its finally warm enough around here (Colorado) that I decided to get this done.

Thankfully, my Demon was one of the last built so I was fully aware of the chipping issues and went overboard with the PPF and wrapped it in the edges of the insert to protect the paint. Well, it worked. No paint chips. My plan is to have the shop trim back the "excess PPF" and install the new unit. Fingers crossed that it will come out looking like new.

I'll update once its back in the garage.

Has anyone else done this yet? If so, did you get to keep the original unit?

Had mine done in January and the lady who does the warranty work at the dealership told me to return the original insert. When I returned the insert to the parts counter the guy looked up the insert number and asked me if I wanted it back. I said of course and ask what was he going to do with it ? He replied it was going in the dumpster !

Did mine just a few days ago. Had to touch up some spots where the paint was chipped off and after letting the clear coat dry, I sanded it down with 2500 wet sand paper to blend in and then did a two step polish. Looks good, never know it was done. I got to keep the original insert as they did not want it back.

Are they doing a recall or do you have to file a complaint ?

My insert is OK driving
If it sits in the sun you can watch it grow

No actual recall. But if you see that it is growing and scraping off the paint in the sides or if it is even only growing & deforming which it will do down the road, you just need to go to the dealer and get them to file a warranty complaint and Mopar will honor it and send you a new insert that is very different to the original in the way it is held in, is also beefier and slightly narrower but nothing that you will really notice.

If the paint is damaged, they will repaint the top of the hood or do just a minor paint repair.

They were willing to do a repaint on mine but I decided to repair it mysilf and hope it looks ok and if it did not look good after I did it myself, then they would still paint it for me.

Yeah, there were a few in the first batch this summer that made it through. This batch of inserts is round two. Mine came out great. No chips, looks perfect. I got to keep the old expand-o-matic insert (some dealers are anal about this and won't allow it). Hit or miss.

Putting it on the garage wall. not a bad idea!

buckle is more like it. significantly different expansion coefficients between the old composite insert and the aluminum hood.

#FCA_engineering F_Up

with the new insert it looks like they have solved the issue...

I took my car in for an oil change last week and asked my service guy about it. He had me a new one the next day and told me FCA will do up to $1500 to repair and repaint! Now I’ve got to find time to find a good shop and get it fixed.
