Are you sure it's width??...I know all 3/4 ton vehicles require them...I didn't think a 1500 was any wider than a 2500...from any manufacturer..
3/4 ton trucks do not require the lights, some are just ordered with them. Dually trucks require the marker lights because of width (like the TRX and Raptor).

This is the DOT requirement for vehicles that exceed XX" in width (I forget the magic number at the moment), they just got creative and didn't put them up on the roof line like normal.
If they were a legal requirement for width, it would be three of them, flanked by two farther out to the sides. And they'd be on the roof, not on the hood.

Are you sure it's width??...I know all 3/4 ton vehicles require them...I didn't think a 1500 was any wider than a 2500...from any manufacturer..
As mentioned earlier, there's no federal requirement for cab marker lights on a 3/4-ton, unless it's a dually.
And a TRX is (I think) six inches wider than a basic 1500/3500/3500.

DOT requires marker lights on vehicles 80” wide or wider. The TRX is 88” wide, thus the requirement for marker lights.

Wonder what changed? It used to be that cab marker lights were supposed to be mounted as high as practicable, and I think it's been a while since only three were enough. Maybe since the Fifties?

Also, they're called cab marker lights for a reason.

Maybe an exception?

Also, manufacturers have been known to drive regulations in the past. Another example of I can't remember the details for, but changes in rear lighting requirements allowed for changes from incandescent to LED, lumens, square inches of light, etc etc etc. Same up front with headlights.

(Honestly, I'm just guessing)

Yeah, I wondered about the Raptor, too. As I recall, they have what Ram copied.

Cab Lights and Marker Lights are different. The Marker Lights are on the Fenders at the widest point (hence on the rear of the dually’s and the front/rear fenders of the Raptor and the TRX).

My guess is the three marker lights (normally cab lights) in the middle of the Raptor and TRX grill have to be at a minimum height. The back marker lights are a little different. On the TRX and most dually’s they are roughly rear bumper height, where on the Raptor they are included with the 3rd break light.

I did some googling, but couldn’t find a simple answer.

Hmm. Looking at that last photo it seems like the outermost marker lights are amber, not red.
Used to be that anything behind the rearmost axle had to be red.

Those cry closets must've changed a few more things than I thought.

How did that red not make the OPs list for colors? The blue looks good, but that red....

Good info on Clearance/Marker Lights: https://jalopnik.com/why-some-trucks-have-five-little-lights-on-the-roof-1830914130

“The Ford Raptor, a truck with no business anywhere near a loading dock, famously has Identification lamps in the top of its grill and clearance lamps at the edges of its massive fenders. (The Raptor is a comically massive 86.3 inches wide.)

In this case the lights are mounted lower. Legally speaking, they need to be mounted “ as high as practicable” but the government doesn’t specify that they must be on the roof per se. Obviously, sanctioning bodies are OK with Ford’s interpretation here because the raptor has had the lights in the grill since the first generation came out almost a decade ago. Now the little three-amber-light constellation that has become an element of the Raptor’s iconic smile. “

I always liked the correctly positioned cab lights, since they allow me to dim my headlights right before they would blind the driver.
Now that they have turned into a fashion statement instead, the Raptor, TRX (and apparently also Toyota) drivers won't get that advantage.
