I had two Barracudas and a Dodge Swinger with the 340 cu inch. One I managed to get the block out of a wrecked AAR Cuda and put it in my 1969 Barracuda.

Unfortunately I could not get the heads. He sold them to someone else. They were the 360 J-head and you could do more with the heads then the regular 340 heads.

Are the 340-6 heads and valve train special?

340 gets Six-Pak (AAR Cuda & T/A Challengers only), T/A blocks had thicker webs for the ability to install 4 bolt mains
• The 360 J-head saw first limited use in the 1970 340 Six-Pack AAR/TA, which had 2.02/1.60 machined heads and revised pushrod holes for more meat in the intake runners (915’s)
• Engines were painted orange
• A Carter AVS Carburetor (3 Holly Caburetors on the Six-Pak set up)

One of the best little engines Chrysler ever built. Had a '68 340S Barracuda fastback with a 4 speed and 3.91 sure grip. The four speed cars had a special cam, different than the automatics. Ran 13.80 in the quarter with little F70 belted tires. Wanted some 9" slicks in the worst way but could never afford them. Had to feather the throttle all the way through 1st gear until it could hook up in 2nd. Was an easy, low 13 second car with slicks. One of the most fun cars I've ever owned because of it's power, handling and complete fold down rear area where I kept a sleeping bag when out on a date. You get what I'm talkin' bout, right? :)

Did the six paks have a different cam?

A mild hydraulic flat-tappet cam from Sealed Power (part No. LS644) with 0.429-/0.442-inch lift, 201-/ 220-degrees duration and 114 degree LSA matches the cam used in 340s mated to the Torqueflite automatic transmission. Four-speed 340s got a slightly hotter cam in 1968 (only) with 0.445-/0.455-inch lift and a few more degrees of overlap. Stock-spec hydraulic lifters are also from Sealed Power (part No. HT211B). The 1970 340 Six Pack used the same Torqueflite-spec cam used in all other 340s that year.

My 64 Barracuda had a 71 340. Wouldn’t mind having that car again.

Yeah those 340's in an A body car ( always had a thing myself for a 70 Dart Swinger with the twin hood scoops and bumblebee stripe) were the real deal. They could bring a tear to some of the big block guys while doing a little stop light to stop light street drags back in the day. I know I didn't want to mess with them in my 68 roadrunner 383. Put some 3:55 or 3:91 gears in the differential to back up that small block 340 and you will embarrass a lot of the big block cars..

Yeah. 340 rocked. My 71' Dodge Dart Swinger Special had the 318. A competent motor, but no where near the capabilities of the 340.

The 340 is an awesome motor - I have a 340 TA motor that was a replacement block - it was bought for a roundy round dirt track car in the 70's that never got completed. The TA head have a special offset on the intake runners that gives more room for porting the intake side (special offset rocker) - I also have a 340 in my 1967 Dart GT (originally a 273). I really like that motor...
The 360 also has a lot of potential - I built one for my 73 Challenger, going the roller cam route and fully porting the heads with big 2.02's on the intake side - it's a fun runner. Gets up and moves - an easy mid 13 second car, kind of a sleeper

Wasn't a Mopar guy till recently. When I was a kid in the early mid seventies my brother always had worked out '55 Chevy's with small blocks, big solid cams, 4 spds and deep 4 series rears. Pretty rowdy and fast. One day the kid across the street was tooli'n on his white 340 4spd Duster in the street while my brother was working on the '55 on the other side. I thought the Duster was ok but not too loud or tuff. When my neighbor was done tinkering he took the Duster to the end of the block and let her go. That thing really turned on. Tach'd up and got loud. Sideways holeshot, smoke, and slammin the gears with power shifts. That thing was really moving. I was like 8 or 10 but that left an impression I still remember.
