hardly... you could beat the living shiite out of a slant 6, run it nearly out of oil, and it'd just keep on running
same with the chev 283

However, if you run one wide open on an engine stand it will throw a rod through the block. (My high school power mechanics class)

No body wants the 5.7L - interesting. The I6 being mostly plastic, no dip stick, etc I'd have though would put buyers off. It would me.
Turbo direct injection engines come with extra features like fuel dilution in the oil; valve deposits and extra complexity.
It'll be like the European cars. Be ready for major maintenance issues with all the plastic that starts disintegrating at 70k miles or so.

You were literally there for service on a brand new car too... one with known engine issues. lol Come on man :ROFLMAO:

If they can fit the 5.7 then they can fit the 6.4... so offer the 6.4 so that you have a competitive V8 in the truck instead of a boat anchor.
I would be shocked if they offered the 5.7 or 6.4 in the Charger. I kinda doubt they will last very long in the Ram to be honest. Tim said when you have too many engine options it makes each model more expensive because you have to certify all of them and the dealers don’t want to order so many different powertrains.

I think the Hurricane will replace the 5.7 and the H.O. Hurricane will replace the 6.4. Then for upper trim$ a couple of different Hellcat variants. That would essentially be two main power plants covering all the power needs from 420hp to over 1000hp.

That’s how you have to think for production and dealership reasons. The days of 6 different powertrains for one platform are long gone unfortunately.

I agree Swede, no reason to have 5 engines available. Of course, when you look at the best selling truck in America they always have a variety of powertrains. In 2011 they offered 3 NA motors and 1 ecoboost. (3.7na, 3.5eco, 5.0na, 6.2na).
In 2024 they had 1 NA motor, 4 ecoboost varieties, and a supercharged V8. (5.0na, 2.7eco, 3.5eco, 3.5ho, 3.5power, and 5.2super).
They had an engine for everyone.
IMO, the Charger can come EV, 3.0TT, 3.0TT HO, and Hellcat. That covers everyone. I’d argue that nobody bought a Scat or an RT or because it has a 5.7/6.4 they bought it because they couldn’t get the Hellcat. The V6 was there for people that didn’t like horsepower, the NA V8s were for people that wouldn’t be caught dead driving the V6 and still wanted some street cred, and the Hellcats sold like hotcakes even after their MSRP went up nearly $30k for the same damn car they were making in 2015. It kept selling because they kept adding horsepower to the top (and they had to replace their stolen cars).
Thing is, if it can fit the HC… it can fit the 5.7/6.4 so you’re leaving money on the table for those that won’t buy a TTi6 and can’t afford the HC, but want a V8 - and there are a few of those people out there. I’m just not one of them. New tech doesn’t scare me like these old dogs.

Damn! How did you figure out that I don't like horsepower?

Pretty sure I haven't told anybody.

I believe they have a problem on their hands. They're stuck with a platform that was intended to be some kind of weird hybrid hatch back EV that had an ICE offering as an after thought just in case. Now that the EV thing has imploded they're scrambling to make due with what they have, and it'll be full of compromise and probably not very good at anything.

If I were in charge, I'd be talking to my team about cutting our losses and developing a new car. I'd figure out the absolute bare minimum effort to put in to the Charger which is probably some form of EV and then one of the I6 variants and call it a day. Devote the rest of my resources to developing something new that people actually want.

But that's just me.

We were given a written assessment quiz after a few lessons. Based on how you scored, you were assigned to an engine to tear down, measure clearances, reassemble, and start up. If it started on the first attempt, the group received an A. Second attempt, an A- and so on.

The top group was assigned to a nice Pontiac 326.
Second group got a very nice Slant 6.
Third group got a Buick Nail head that had been abused by a special ed class.
Lowest scoring group received a lawn mower engine.
(Self-esteem wasn't a major concern in 1969.) ;)

On startup day, our group's 326 started on the second try. The distributor was rotated 180 degrees.

The Slant 6 group got theirs going (not sure how many attempts) only to have one of the kids from the lawn mower group come over and dislodge a carburetor spring which caused it to go WOT. Everyone ducked behind benches until it blew. I've never seen a teacher so pissed off.

There’s rumors that it will have an aluminum block which is a necessity at this point.
Not a chance.

Sad but probably true. Since the Hemi’s are going to be around for a while they really do need to do this. Everyone else has had them for 25+ years.
