Volkswagen has moved its EV assembly stateside, and now has a plan to recycle all the new lithium batteries it plans to produce

Volkswagen has committed to becoming an all-electric vehicle company within the next decade, and its American branch immediately realized that two things needed to be done. With the VW ID4 going all-American in assembly by 2022, they needed all-American battery production to reduce supply chain woes, and a method of recycling their old batteries. The solution is a plan to use old batteries as energy storage solutions at VW's affiliated Electrify America stations, and the automaker's new Battery Engineering Lab in Chattanooga, Tennessee, will develop more battery technologies to take VW into its all-American EV futur

VW's need to move battery production closer to its U.S. ID4 assembly plant became apparent due to the continued global supply chain shortages that began back in 2020, which run the risk of interrupting company plans to sell all EVs by the start of the next decade.
To help secure itself in the current volatile market, part of VW's $2.7 billion investment in North American production included a partnership with SK Innovation. SK Innovation is part of SK Group, a Korean energy provider that includes petroleum refining and exploration and is expanding into alternative energy, with some battery manufacturing located here in the U.S.
Even so, relying on just SK for production won't be enough, and VW is opening its own Battery Engineering Lab (BEL) in Chattanooga, Tennessee in May. This $22 million investment will allow VW to test and validate current and new battery technologies for the American market.
The BEL will work in conjunction with VW's Center of Excellence (CoE) North American Region battery research facilities in Chattanooga and Belmont, California. The CoE will also work closely with partner Quantumscape in San Jose, California for solid-state battery development, and 24M in Cambridge, Massachusetts on a project described as "re-imagining the design of battery cells."
There is also a need to do something with the battery cells that nearing end-of-life. That's where VW laid out a lifecycle plan for its current and future lithium-based batteries. While the required usefulness of a battery pack may no longer work in a car, the pack is still usable in other applications as many of the cells will still hold a charge.
VW plants to utilize those packs that are no longer feasible for automotive use as energy storage at Electrify America charging stations. Doing so will allow EA stations to ease off use of the local electricity grid by utilizing its own stored energy during peak times, along with help from EA's solar power connections.
Eventually, though, the energy storage capability of those old packs will reduce to an unusable state. From that point, the battery packs will be broken down and recycled back into new battery packs, reusing the minerals that make up the liquid electrolyte within the layers of a lithium-ion battery.
This closes the planned circle of life for VW's lithium-ion battery use, reducing some of the need for new raw materials. VW hasn't laid out if they will partner with someone in this step—there are already many lithium-ion battery recycling companies in the U.S.—or go it alone.
Cheaper batteries, repurposing old packs for energy storage at charging stations, and recycling unusable packs to make new batteries; the all-EV future that VW has promised so far sounds a lot more sustainable and realistic thanks to the plans laid out today. Now, we'd love for VW to release a RWD EV Beetle along with the new ID Buzz to make this future even more fun, exciting, and sustainable. We haven't heard anything of the sort, but fingers crossed.

Well there is a bad looser right off the bat ster. Chattanooga, Tenn is looking for a dump site for it's Combustion Engineering site for past nuclear out of the way river site. History,,, Combusting Engineering placed all their $$$ into the nuke industry. After the plant up north went nose up. Their fossil fuel went south and the nuke fuel all $$$ went into north, Charlotte Co, Fl, and now Crystal River.
Thus has turned Chattanooga into a waste pool of batteries. 1 more nuke plant in Tennessee and fixin to be de commissioned. Which means 0 and fossil fuel plants like Widows Creek, Tenn River only one left. Appollo Beach has 2 working plants but can't work central Florida. Bad news for Duke Energy, they purchased the whole Florida grid as is. Crystal River Nuke Plant will take 200 years to decommission the reactor. The small round building, not the 30 story cooling towers you see spouting steam. That is from the coal fired plants Biden is putting out of control along with the coal miners. The natural gas, clean fuel, is being moth balling. This administration is beginning to work with the Mexican Government whom holds the largest reserves in Central America. Has been and will be for many years to come.
We will freeze to death, run out of gas, no moe shine, inflation thru the solar panels and China made turbines,,,, befoe this energy administration gets it's diamond out of it's goats ass shining from the moon.

Sounds encouraging...no small endeavor..the degree of difficulty..yet to be determined..we can only watch as the initiative unfolds...:cautious::cautious:

Because lithium is mined by children...
Because nickel is from our enemies...

Look up this process...

Eventually, though, the energy storage capability of those old packs will reduce to an unusable state. I am on the page in life mankind creates the good and the bad. And there is always a consequence in the end that creates something else no matter what we do in this physical universe. But at the same time “Change” forces the hand to be creative which all here want the better for mankind in the end. Accomplishing this is not an easy task which is what drives the divisions on others and the greed to enrich the select few. Fossil Fuels will continue to make the World go round as we know it but at the same time its only right to advance modern transportation with alternative energy and methods. And how we advance to the next level in transportation is still to be seen that actually overcomes the Cause and Effect challenges.

Stellantis should be making an announcement on their first battery plant sometime this week, maybe tomorrow. It will be located in Windsor, Ontario with construction starting in a month or 2.

Let us just all hope they find the correct materials for these batteries and get the technology right. Meanwhile others have lots of work to do to our own electricity systems to make this all happen.

I can see having a bad EV battery in the future and not being able to get a replacement!

The land that the VW plant is built on is a super waste fund. The plant itself is only less than 10 years old, but. It has a dark past. A huge partial of land was dedicated to Farmers Chemical producing fertilizer. And what do they make bombs out of?? This plant almost killed Chattanooga. At one time it produced 1/3 of the TNT supplied to the Vietnam war. This land is tainted already, so bury a couple million batteries there and make a big bomb. I am just a product of my environment. My environment says,,, hold your breath.

F-ing canadians even stealing our battery plants! Got in there before the Mexicans this time, did you? Stellantis executives for the win! More "American muscle cars!"

Ironically the new plant is going where the last "GREEN ENERGY" plant failed
The windmill plant

That guy probably has the same twig & berries as Bruce Jenner ;)

You Canucks folks know I'm being sarcastic right?

Also, now that.your government is secure until 2025 you've got more time to work on the battery plant and hellephant, right?

You have to work harder to offend a Canadian Mag

Except reminding me we are stuck till 2025 with Justin Castro just sent me off

Below is where the new plant will be
For the geography challenged
It is actually south of Detroit
Yes yes part of Southern Ontario ( Essex County ) is actually south of Detroit
I m sure this also had a part in the location being 5 minutes from the US border
