Hey guys, curious - is the pinion the same on all diffs regardless of ring gear? (Same amount of teeth). Also, why does no one make an aftermarket ring gear for these cars yet?

even if the teeth where the same you can`t mix an match an expect them to survive. pinion an ring gear are machined for each other.
no parts other than seals that I could find an no factory info available in service manuals. discard an on to the next is what they want you to do.

Yep what oilburner said, can't mix and match and they are cut together. I am surprised someone doesn't make a ring and pinion set though. Could do a 2.85 and maybe a 3.30, 3.55. Could even do a 3.09 replacement

That raises a question. Did you break your rear? I guess it’s possible for the pinion to have the same number of teeth for different ratios but I do not think that’s how they make them? The number of teeth on the ring gear divided by the number of teeth on the pinion gives you the ratio but they are a matched set and can’t be split up like vortecd explained. Intuitively, if you had the same pinion for different ratios, the teeth on the ring gear would have to be thinner (weaker) for lower ratios to accommodate more teeth on the ring gear. Does that mean the spacing and pitch on the pinion teeth also have to be changed to work with more teeth on the ring gear?

Thanks for confirming, was just curious. Knew you would know. Wish someone would make an aftermarket ring and pinion for these shouldn’t cost more than $500
