Sometimes I'm working on a project and it's going so smooth I'm afraid to stop and take a break for fear of jinxing myself LOL.

We recently completed another 315 tire install at the shop. This time we took some pictures so we could share how we do it and help those looking to do the same thing.

The 315/50/17 tire is a relatively new tire from M/T and a great step between the 305/45 and a 15" conversion. However, the cars we see with these tires almost always have a large spacer to help the tire clear the inner wheel well. This does the job but in our opinion it makes the car look pretty silly. Our approach is to modify the inner wheel well to clear the section width of the tire and keep everything inside the factory quarter panel.

This is what the wheel well looks like from factory.

This is the area we modify. It gets pushed in and smoothed out.

We then prep, mash, and color match paint the area.

Finally the fender liner is cut and reinstalled.

The finished product is a tire that doesn't rub, doesn't stick out, and keeps the car looking clean and professional.

Was this on a 17x11 wheel?

You needed a bigger hammer;) It didn't take long to do. Mine are 30mm offset and I did find some wheels with 32 or 33 which you would need more room

I did a thread on this way back when that tire first came out. Pretty sure it was on the lizard forum. I still have a couple pics that are dated July 2018. Nobody at that time had learned the sledgehammer technique so I just took a grinder and got rid of the stiffener bump with that. It’s still like that now. When I went to the 15” Radial Pro, it required a lot more space and the saw and hammer had to come into play. 79CDE14D-DE54-4F02-B6E4-550500FBE355.jpeg 303557BC-FA92-42EF-8450-F6D1D2749D41.jpeg AFA5F616-E524-476C-AE5A-39E5FC064EB7.jpeg 00AB9A64-3545-4CB4-AAE3-DFEA83CC7DA1.jpeg BB94D83A-D6A0-4FE1-AE4D-B46580A717F3.jpeg

did you use seam sealer tape over the cuts?

No. I just painted the exposed metal to keep it from rusting. There is nothing inside or behind there that matters. For me the key was to use a wheel that tucked the tire in as far as you can get it. No matter how much massaging needed to do that. I would not use a spacer or Widebody backspace because sticking out looks stupid. Just my opinion of coarse.

have the flares because of that same reason. I like them, not everyone’s cup of tea

Agreed…interested if anyone will had the Devil flares to the front of their 170. The small flare would lessen the difference between the non-flared front and wide flared rear.

Do they wrap around the fender opening at the bottom, in turn allowing for less travel? I noticed my 315/60/15s rub on the fender lip under certain circumstances, it doesn't seem like they do at launch though but with more power at launch, I'm worried they will. I have been considering the same flares as you or just going to the full widebody flares and fender liners on the rear to tuck the tire.

If anyone wants to I have a set of fronts for sale but their paint matched to my car
