I’ve asked my builder and been wondering what this sound was that started up last week.

I checked a number of things. But I’m afraid it’s one of the lifters.

also asked a couple of other mechanically inclined friends and they agreed.

I’m going to need to get these replaced.

anybody have any experience changing these out. Good video I can watch?

I’m interested in doing this myself. So any link to a good tear down I would like to see that.

thanks

This might help. Not a tear down but a assembly. Just work backwards:p

Edit- Put the video to the end and watch it in reverse. :D

You have to remove the cylinder heads . They are in the block under the heads .

I watched that video about 300 times lol . Awesome video .

Hey whip
It's not that bad of a job . Believe it or not the hardest part is getting the valve cover off .

You guys are gonna laugh, but I'm gonna say it anyway. I had this happen on Orange Krush. Developed a tap tap tap after a drag strip run. Used a stethoscope and determined it was a lifter. Yep, heads have to come off to replace them on these cars.

I pulled the valve cover and rocker arm and took out the push rods on the offending side. Took about 45 minutes and wasn't too bad on that car. Hellcat might be a bit trickier due to the extra stuff in the way.

As a last ditch effort I sprayed Seaform in the push rod bores and let it soak a few hours. Put it all back together and went for a drive. By the time the engine was at operating temp the tapping stopped. It never came back the next 3-4 years I had the car.

I was shocked but it worked and saved me a load of labor.

I ask because I know with the stock manifolds and some long tube headers you don't have to unbolt them from the heads . They come right out when you lift the head out .

Got a video of the sound? Is it a constant tapping that gets louder as rpms increase?

Won’t a collapsed lifter wipe out your cam? Roller will be bouncing up and down on a cam lobe?

Also @FFBOS thought the same thing, and may have had the same symptoms, but it was the cam gear that got wiped out I believe.

Could it just be a rocker arm or a valve spring? Maybe the spring retainer keepers? So far it sounds like a lot of speculation and no “wrenches have been turned” yet? I would be removing the valve cover to see what is going on? I would not be startingbit to listen to the problem any longer. That’s just me...

Is it only in a certain rpm range or does it do it through the whole rpm range? Does it do it also under part throttle?

it only does it when I get on it like the video.

the car sound perfect other than when I get on the throttle.
I’m not flooring it in the video but I am getting in throttle pretty decent. Part throttle doesn’t make it come on.
I haven’t been wailing on it since then. I’ve got maybe 30 miles on it sounding like this.
I’ve parked it and she’s in my garage now.
