I was detailing my DSRT a few days ago and noticed this on my driver's side bumper:
(there's another small patch of wrinkling a little lower on that same side):

20250618_170043.jpg

Which is by chance almost exactly what happened to my '19 Stinger GT some time after I bought it new:
(and curiously enough, also on the driver's side)

Untitled1.jpg

Neither of the cars had "wrinkling" appear anywhere else except on the cars driver's side bumper.
What gives? Anyone know or have a guess?

thnx

Paint on the Durango’s is a big issue, especially around that time

Thing is, it also happened 6 years ago on my '19 Stinger GT in the same way and in the same area of the vehicle.
And both the Stinger and the DSRT are black (it never occurred with my other non black colored vehicles).

So I was at a car meetup and I talked to my friend who is an engineer, who also restores cars, whose son owns a body shop.
He looked at it and in less than 60 sec said he thought he might have the answer.

He said look for something in your neighborhood that would throw a focused reflected beam of some sort into an area of my driveway (flagpole, antenna, etc).
He said he could see where spots of wrinkling appeared in a horizontal direction across the surface (suggesting the movement of the sun was involved).

He might be onto something.
He also said he didn't think it was repairable, that a new bumper was probably needed.

Interesting there aren't any responses since my post regarding my engineer friend's observations.

I think he hit the nail on the head, and he did it in extremely short order. Kudos to engineers!

I disagree.....to generate the heat needed to cause that surface damage...it would need to be in close proximity to the surface...just my .02

I don’t buy it, you’d see tons of cars with that issue all the time. Looks more like how when a solvent gets on paint

Also makes no sense why the bumper would have to be replaced, maybe for a shop that can’t sand it down, which good body shops can do and paint it perfectly

That doesn't wash, how do you explain it happening both times just on the driver's side front bumper and only on the cars I owned that were painted black?

Why does the color black absorb heat?
https://www.colorwithleo.com/why-does-the-color-black-absorb-heat/

"The color black absorbs heat more than any other color because of its unique physical properties. Black objects absorb light waves from the sun in the visible spectrum and convert that solar radiation into heat. The light waves are absorbed so much that very little gets reflected, allowing the surface temperature of black objects to rise. Understanding why this occurs requires an examination of the characteristics of color, light, and heat."

Reflected light seems unlikely, would need to be close by & intense/focused by something acting as a prism to damage paint like that.

Looks like it’s happening here too. Environmental, if it happened to 2 cars. Where did you bring both to? Have any neighbors that don’t like you? I’m more inclined to say crap paint job with oils under the paint/ not enough hardener

Well you say it doesn't wash....there can be many reasons for the paint imperfection...you seem to attach some significance to the compromised area..(lower drivers side bumper)...I'm certainly sure a visual of the area around where you park the vehicle will rule out sun reflection.....now if still not convinced..I suggest you turn the car around when parked..in the same spot as usual....if your theory..(and your engineer's)...is valid...you should see evidence of the same deterioration...my guess you will not..in which case you rule out his explanation...
