I've been to China, life changing culture shock. But the most difficult issue I had was the family style dining in even high end restaurants. I have no problem with family style dining (restaurant places bowls of many different foods on a lazy susan on the middle of the table and everyone takes as much as they want) but....
Here we discover the difference between Americanized restaurants and Authentic China restaurants.
In authentic, there are no serving utensils. Everyone just dipped their chopsticks into the big bowls and scooped what they wanted into their plate. Over and over again.
The host invited a handful of lead employees to dinner, maybe 8-10 of us total, we all swapped spit. I went along hoping not to offend, I was hungry, just took enough to get by.
I absolutely mean no disrespect, but this is a huge difference between our cultures. I am sure there things we do that offend other cultures, perhaps much worse.
The food was really good!!!
