This started off as a quick question for Ron in his thread but it got long so I decided to just make a thread for it so I don't inadvertently hijack his. Any real world suggestions would be appreciated. I decided to just copy and paste it because a good bit of the info I'm looking for can best be provided by Ron due to him having owned 2 of the 3 cars I'm considering...

Ron,
This isn't exactly on topic but it seems like as good a place as any to ask you.
You have a unique set of circumstances that, coupled with my own experiences w my RE, might be able to help me decide what my next move is.

I'm considering buying a second car. I really like the one I have and I've always intended for it to be in the family forever. Having said that I think I need to quit beating on it or else it won't live the long life I'd like it to have.

So..
I'm looking at 3 options. For various reasons each has it's own upside. In the end I'll just have to make up my mind a go with something. I'm hoping your thoughts might help me make up my mind. Without wasting too much typing these are the 3 options I'm looking at:

1 - 2020 SS. There are only a few that are priced even remotely reasonable at this point. I've actively tried to buy one for a little while but w no real success. MANY of them have had stupid high ADM's added to them during the time I've been trying to buy them. Example: the cloth seat car that's near you has a $30k ADM on it right now. That makes a 2 option car be priced at $114k. F**king crazy.
I have however found one that can be bought for $78k plus fees. That's reasonable but it's a semi loaded leather seat car and that's not really what I'm looking for.

2 - 2020 REWB. I've located one that's a 2 option car: REWB and 3.09 gear. Looks like it can be bought for about $10k less than the above mentioned SS. Not rare, not particularly low production, just a good base car to go pound on at the dragstrip.
Also, the hiccup deal can be tuned out of this car pretty easily I'd think(if this one has the same issue as yours had) and other than the lighter brakes would weigh in similarly to an SS.

3 - 2021 SS. Base SS is $83k. I don't know if any of the available discounts would/could apply to an ordered car. I have my "guy" looking into that for me today. Probably have to wait a few months to get it and it'll not likely be "rare" like the 2020 model. Still though, I can get the basic car I want if I order one.

FWIW - I'll likely start off playing w the new car stock until I max out what I think it's capable of and then give Curt a call and see where I decide to go from there. So, warranty and the like don't really apply much to the new car.

Thanks,
Bo

Bo, since it sounds like your modifying it, then the question of rare or not don’t matter much. Delete #1. Now this is going to get easy. Same thinking, your going to mod it. There is no significant engine/tranny/equipment difference. Brakes? Does the wheel size etc. matter if your drag racing? Can you mod the RE to wear the same wheels? Buy the cheaper platform IMO.

Same suspension, same engine, and youre modding anyway. Save the cash and get the RE. SS gives you things that youre planning on changing anyway. I think if you were leaving it stock then SS would give the advantage just with the tune and tires but youre modding all of that. @DGatzby is right imo.

If you are ready to buy now I would probably go with #2. But if you pull weight out and do the race wheels and tires and get a strong motor and run in good DA that thing is going to be un raceable if it is programmed the same as mine was. I was in average DA with heavy wheels and tires and it was SHOCKING every time the car did that. You better be ready to tune it. I would never mess with the brakes on a brand new car so the large brakes would have to stay and it's not a problem.

If you wanted to leave the car closer to stock and nail some really good times, it is Super Stock all the way.

I think I saw a video that was showing a 2021 SS in the showroom already? So maybe not such a long wait for that car? I also think as time goes on you may score a deal on a 2020.

Thanks for the input DGatzby, Slow and Ron. Your opinions pretty much match mine. With the weird shifting/rev limit issue Ron experienced w his '20 RE maybe I'll look around and see what's out there in the way of low mileage '19 RE's before I pull the trigger on anything.
And yes Ron, I'm expecting these high attempted ADM's to fall flat w the SS so maybe I should hold off a bit and see if some of these dealers get back in the real world on their pricing.

Sounds like the overall intention is to have a car to go race and not feel too bad about it? Does it have to be a widebody? If not I'd suggest a regular body Redeye, throw some big tires on it and go have at it! Doesn't sound like you are afraid to potentially tune a car some day anyway, right?

I've already been 10.0's w my stock RE. I've done a good job of resisting the urge to modify it in any way from a driveling standpoint. That car is still as nice as it was the day I bought it. I plan to keep it "forever", call it an heirloom car.
I've always been a racer though and right now these cars have my attention. That's why the idea of a second one came about. Keep my red one to ride around town w my gearhead granddaughter in and get another one to take to the track and enjoy the challenge of learning how to make it go faster.
I definitely want a widebody. I already have wheels and tires for one and truthfully I just like the look a lot more.
As for tuning, I have no fear of that. I do enjoy the challenge of making what's sitting there run to its potential. Learning what they do and do not like in order to get the best #'s I can. So.. there is appeal to buying something that will go from A to B pretty cleanly in what some here like to call "stock tune" form. That's where the '20 RE scares me. Ron's experience w his tells me to expect to have to at least tune the TCM right out of the gate.. and then the stock tune part just went out the window before I even get to address that challenge.
Anyway, lots of thoughts roaming around in my head right now.

I did do some looking at low mileage used '19 RE's this morning. Looks like it takes somewhere in the 70's to get one of them. That's not an appealing price at all when you consider that w discounts a '20 car is in the same basic range.

I saw that LONGUN. I would have replied to you but the pm is locked and won't let me reply. FYI - I'm looking for a non sunroof car for sure. That's some pounds I just don't want to carry down the track.

Found it.
'21 Sinnamon Stick REWB. Some decent options, no sunroof and it's a factory 3.09 car. Numbers are ironed out and I have a deposit down on it. We'll be going up Monday w my trailer to pick it up.

Nice. Optioned close to mine, I don’t have a sunroof, and went with the gear and the spoiler. That is unique, not many in that color.

While I personally do not really like that color, I'll be dammed if it doesn't look good on a Challenger! That will be fun to own because you will probably not see another - congrats! :)

Thanks guys. I've been quietly looking for several weeks. For me the Sinnamon Stick is beautiful on the Challenger, especially with the carbon stripes.
I was hell bent on finding a suitable car that didn't have a sunroof. The weight and the helmet clearance issue just aren't something I wanted to tolerate on this one.
I've looked everywhere I could think of to find as much of what's out there and wasn't really having any luck. Then a few days ago someone posted this car on the RE section of the 'other' site. I located it and it was REALLY close to being exactly what I wanted. It does have hood pins and I'm not a huge fan of them but that wasn't a deal breaker.
In the end, with Dodge discounts, I ended up getting it for $13.5k under MSRP. I'm happy with that.

I can't wait to see when you start racing it. I don't even know of another 2020 that races with a good tire whether it hiccups like my Frostbite car did, or not. You should start a thread when you get going...........

I personally dig the color and the wheels and the SRT Performance Spoiler. Curious on the MPH's too.

Sinnamon Stick with stripes looks great! I've seen that color on Chargers without stripes or satin anything and they looked okay, much better in sun than on showroom floor.

On a Challenger with the stripes...stroooongah!!!

Congrats on landing it and please post up some more pics when you can.

I'm curious as to how it'll act on a tire myself Ron. This car is a '21. I sort of have my fingers crossed that they un did whatever they screwed up between the '19 and the '20. I really like the idea of wringing it out pretty good before making any real changes to it. Being a no sunroof car it'll have a slight advantage over my red car in the weight department. I also have a *theory* about why my red car doesn't mph. It's not a factory 3.09 car. I've personally seen, as well as read on here about, factory 2.62 cars and factory 3.09 cars out mph'ing my red car. Most have trouble out et'ing it but damn near anyone that even tries can out mph it. Maybe there's a difference in calibration or programming in general between the two factory setups?? I have nothing but empirical evidence to back this idea up though. When I ran beside Marc's wife's RE at Carolina Dragway and watched both cars act really similar all the way down except his never quit pulling I began to wonder...
So, with the new car being a factory 3.09 car I can maybe run good on both ends of the track. I really like the idea of making some 9 second passes with it before making any tuning changes.

Thank you! IMO the color benefits from the body lines of the widebody and the carbon stripes complete the look. Cosmetically, to my eye, I bought the prettiest RE that's available right now. Plus, my 3 yr old granddaughter LOVES it. :)

I was gonna tell you to go used all the way, but it looks like I'm late to the party LOL. You got a nice car. I don't know if being able to buy these 21s for $13.5K under MSRP is a good thing or not long term for these cars, but certainly a good deal for you I'd say!
