I will say that my trans slams into gear when downshifting while in tow mode. I was told that it's normal.
Is that from pump pressure increase on the the clutch packings to stop slippage/tear up of packings When in tow haul mode?

I have no idea but it gets brutal at times.

Sounds a bit like the cat when in track mode and paddle shifting.

I've never used the paddle shifter. I tired of them about 10 years ago.

Yep your right Mike. Automatics have had problems handling that Cummins torque since they first dropped it in the Dodge Square body in late 80s Probably why most folks doing real hauling went with stick trans. Less BS to deal with, in fact they held back on power with that engine for a long time and had it de tuned. Engineers new it would break shit from fly wheel to pavement, and it did.
Plenty of NV4500 and subsequent manuals have died behind Cummins engines.
On the later versions (G 56) it was the clutch that was the weak point...with derated engines, because that's all you got with a stick shift.

I will say I don’t hear to much about the Allison trany breaking.
Dodge backed out of the Allison deal as did Ford. GM even built a plant just for both companies. If Dodge used the Allison, they would have destroyed GM and Ford HD truck sales. It still may happen when the new ZF 8 speed arrives. If it's as good as I think it will be; watch Ram kick the power up big time. Maybe 500+ hp. They cannot do it yet with the trasmissions they are using.

I remember GM having an Allison plant north of Baltimore. Same place?

You are correct. Both GM and Ford are using the same transmission in their HD's They are exact copies of their joint smaller 10 speeds only twice as big. The chief engineer at Allison spent 2 years setting the 10 speed up for GM. Ford set up their own.
I just got word from one of my insiders that ZF had a lot to do with both 10 speeds. The Baltimore plant was built for Ford and Dodge.
