I went to 6 this year being mine is full there and after watching engine masters about oil pans. If you get into windage you can loose oil pressure and hp. I think ideally you would need to have a 9 qt pan and run 7 qt

A good test would to be to run the car full out and watch the oil pressure. May have to try that now and add oil and see. I like having more capacity but at what point is it needed?

Also an engine on a dyno compared to accelerating isn't apples to apples either
Obviously with a full oil pan at idle you are not getting windage. The oil level is below the crankshaft. I don’t see how at wide open throttle you get windage since the oil is circulating through the block. It doesn’t splash up on the crank because of the windage screen. It seems like running less oil could cause cavitation? I think 6 qts in the 2015-16’s was a typo given that they use the same oil pan as later models. Even the 5.7’s take 7 qts.

Agree on oil pressure loss, especially at 6k WOT!! front sump/oil pickup pan design on the platform was a poor choice during original design, G force under acceleration puts the oil where you don’t want it, in the back of the pan flooding the crank. A bad thing but what would be worse is a uncovered oil pick up, I think that’s why they went to 7 Qts around 17-18, they must have learned something when testing the Demon but couldn’t change pick up and pan design so they took the cheap way out and added a extra Qt of oil as the fix lol
Good theory. About the only way to test it would be to run the car with 6 quarts and watch the oil pressure. Then add a 1/2 quart and if no change add another 1/2. More capacity is a plus

The whole show isn't here but gives you an idea. The engine made the most power and had the highest oil pressure with 5 quarts with this pan

BTW, BTW, on way to Phoenix today, if you need someone to show you how to drive that thing pick me up from the airport around noon :)
Ha I would but I don’t live there anymore!

Never heard of the 7 qt thing, didn’t know it changed for the later models.

Only thing missing is they should have ran the test on a centrifuge to simulate launch and acceleration G force to find out when they took a bit too much oil out lol. I’d rather loose a few HP to windage then a engine due to oil starvation from a empty oil pan!!

Flight delayed, didn’t leave Charlotte yet, boarding now finally. You still got 5 hours to get there, fill up and put the pedal down and you can still make it!!

Yea, the 7 Qt thing came out 3 years or so ago.

Redeye and Demon oil pans have baffles to prevent slosh at launch if memory serves. Not sure in later Hellcats.

Mine makes about 45psi oil pressure at idle and 65psi at wot. I run 7qts.

My Billet Tech catch can only collects an ounce or so every 3kish miles.

With your redeye engine yours may be different then mine then.

I just may have to go test the theory on my car.

What brand catch can? Some work better than others and catch every drop, like UPR units.
Mine is a JLT, came with the car. Only thing I’m not a fan of is how it mounts, might make a custom mount for it.

Correction, 45psi idle and 72psi at WOT. Just checked a log on mine, Redeye engine for clarification.

You really don't need a dipstick to put 7 quarts, just saying

I don't know if @jonx96 is logging oil pressure. If 7 quarts isn't causing anything to happen then would rather have more

Correct but I need a dipstick to determine how much oil is still in there in between oil changes.

It’s the only way guys like us communicate with eachother. If I don’t like you, I won’t even talk to you. If you’re my closest friend, you get to hear terms of endearment such as “Dumbass” or “Captain Dipshit”….

Ha obviously being a bit facetious but, when I left the military full time for the civilian world after 18 years, I had to change my vocabulary significantly!

Plus, we all know you don’t have any balls…:D

My daughter just sent me this...

Drinking a beer in my backyard after a long day of cleaning the car. Drive about 4 hours West on I-10 and then 6 hours North on I-15 and I’ll buy the first round!
